At the age of fifteen, Mary Queen of Scots wore a red “carbuncle” at her marriage to the Dauphin of France. The red stone was carved en cabochon into an oval with a high dome at the top and flat bottom; it was said to be worth the then-fortune of five hundred crowns. An eyewitness description of the marriage at Notre-Dame Cathedral is recorded at the National Trust of Scotland:

Mary was dressed in a robe as white as lilies. Her immensely long train was borne by two young girls. She glittered like a goddess with diamonds around her neck, and on her head a golden crown garnished with pearls and rubies and one huge carbuncle.
